I Surrender All to You!

I can remember singing in Church, ‘I surrender all, I surrender all’, but what does that mean. Over the years I often felt it is possibly easier to give your life in a one off event, than it is to live and give your life to God. This is not just about going to Church or supporting charities, or attending coffee mornings, it is about total commitment in every aspect of life.

Surrender is to give in to someone or something.

Stop resisting to an enemy or opponent and submit to their authority.

synonyms: capitulate, give in, give (oneself) up, yield, concede, submit, climb down, give way, defer, acquiesce, back down, cave in, relent, succumb, quit, crumble;

Surrender has the connotation that you are forced into submission but whether you give your life to God or not, it is a choice. The choices we make have consequences or rewards. God wants a relationship with us or with you, he knocks on the door, it is up to us if we choose to open it or to reject Him.

What do we lose? What do we gain?

Let us think about who owns what? If I build a house and fully furnish it, and I let you live in it, who does the house belong too?

God made the world and everything in it, and he put you in it? Who does the house belong to?

But the thing is God gives this to us and gives us the choice of what to do with it? He gives us the choice on whether or not to follow Him, and do His will.

When we truly open the door to God, this means total surrender to His will and way in our lives. Why would we do that?

Top reasons for God-exit or Gexit.

  • I want to be free to live my life, my way.
  • I want to live life to the full.
  • I want to have a nice house, nice car and travel.

All these things are based on self gratification, self generated and self performance. These things can come from hard work, theft, cheating, privilege and compromise of beliefs. The irony is you may be searching for freedom, but you can become bound by the process for attaining freedom, becoming a slave.

‘Do you work to live or live to work?’  ‘Do you own things or  do things own you?’

When we rebel from God and reject his way and go our own way we effectively serve Satan, even if we are unaware, we become slaves to sin. Satan seeks to lie, steal and sell us back what is already ours, through Christ.

Top reasons to remain in Him.

  • We are not just slaves, but when we are in God’s will and ask Jesus into our lives we are coheirs.

“So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.” Galatians 4:7

  • God promises us access to all the resources of heaven.

‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

‘Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?  If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!    Matthew 7:7-11

  • Because God loves us and said he will never abandon us.

  • He gives us power.

‘Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.’ Matthew 10:8

‘Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.’  John 14:12

  • We will have eternal life.

‘My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?’ John 14:2

  • He gives us joy.

‘Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.’ 1 Peter 1:8

  • He gives freedom.

‘To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ John 8:31,32

  • There will be a new heaven and a new earth.

‘Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.’  Revelation 21:1

It is not about following a system or set of rules, or gaining eternal secrets or even just learning about God, but about actually knowing Him. When we know God, our Father, and commune with Him, when we totally surrender, we become transformed.
Not just information but transformation. When we are transformed we reflect the colour and love of the kingdom, bringing transformation to others. Seek Him if you do not know Him, He loves you and wants to bless you.
